At present more than 80 research sites in Germany, including 60 Fraunhofer institutes, belong to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The majority of the 17.000 employees are qualified scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research budget of 1.5 billion €. More than 1.3 billion € of this amount are achieved through contract research. Two-thirds of the contract research revenues result from contracts with industrial partners and from publicly financed research projects.
With its clearly defined mission of application-oriented research and its focus on future key technologies, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays an important role in the German and European innovation process.
